Breaking News - New Watering Hole Coming To Arvada

March 20, 2000 -- The Cheshire Cat Brings English Pub To Colorado

It's The Cheshire Cat -- a home away from home. It all began when Charlie and Janine Sturdavant went on one of Pubmaster Geoff Bruce’s English Pub Tours and fell in love with the concept of an English pub in Yorkshire. They even talked about selling up in the USA and buying a pub. Geoff talked some sense into them -- high UK taxes and excess of Yorkshire mutton -- and they began to plot for a real English pub in Colorado.

Geoff located an outstanding but derelict 1892 vintage building within “staggering distance” of his home in Arvada and entered an unholy alliance with Janine and Charlie.

It’s not the first go-round for the Sturdavants. Charlie has been instrumental in two other Colorado brewing operations: Golden City of Golden and Tommyknockers of Idaho Springs. Charlie will be responsible for the beer and Pubmaster Geoff will be the self-described “smiling bum as local English colour at the front door”.

According to Geoff, “We located the 73 year old granddaughter of the people who built the place and we will have quite a collection of stuff from the grandparents. If people like loud music I am advising them to not bother visiting. Most of the place will be non smoking and I also explain that at "The Cat," people will find out that not all Democrats are communists wishing to give the farm away and not all republicans are mean spirited bastards.”

“Charlie is now in the process of installing a brewing system. A 7.5 barrel mash tun and liquor tank are still needed. The electrician and plumbers will be finished by April 1, 2000, then we do the finish work and lo and behold, instant English brewpub, only 18 or so months late.”

He goes on to say, “Of course we will have fish and chips -- done properly course. Charlie will have to produce at least one IPA . I think 90 IBU's will be nearly adequate and we will have a monthly single malt tasting. If I'm the only one there, tough, I'll have to make up for the slackers.
