Breaking News - Bits 'n Pieces From Illinois
November 28, 2000 -- Brian Gustafson fills us in on happenings around the Windy City
Two Brothers Brewing Company of Warrenville, IL recently unveiled their "Artist" series of seasonal brews. These beers are a limited edition (1440 bottles produced) and will be packaged in champagne bottles. The following description is from the back label.
BARE TREE WEISS WINE 2000 is the first in our limited edition "Artist" series of champagne bottle seasonals. This Barley Wine style ale is the only one in the series to receive a vintage date. It is brewed to 24.5 Plato, with 57% wheat, boiled for three hours, pitched with our German Hefe Weizen yeast, finished with a Scottish ale yeast, and then aged with oak. The resulting product is extremely complex, with flavors of melon, fleshy fruits, such as peach and apricot, vanilla, caramel, oak, spicy black pepper notes, and subtle banana esters. These flavors come in large part, from the raw ingredients and thus will vary slightly from vintage to vintage. BARE TREE WEISS WINE 2000 is ready to drink now, but, like wine, will age very well for the next several years. As it ages, the flavor complexities will continue to mature and change. So, whether you decide to enjoy a bottle upon it's release or many years from now, the brewers at Two Brothers offer up a hearty CHEERS!
Ram Brewing of Schaumburg, Illinois recently added a wicked new brew to their fall lineup - a Russian Imperial Stout. This brew is big and bold, malty and strong, with lots of chocolate and spice flavors. Also new at RAM is a faniliar face to Chicago area craft beer enthusiasts. Bob Ward, former brewer at O'Grady's, has joined the RAM team. We wish him all the best in his new endeavor. And, for all you female craft beer lovers out there, Bob is single (hint, hint).
What's Hoppening at Two Brothers Brewing Company?
Two Brother's Brewing Company is announcing a new line of specialty beers, called the Champagne Series. These beers will be available on a quarterly seasonal basis and will be brewed in small batches which translates to a very limited supply of about 140 cases for the Chicago metro area.
"We're just making beer styles up really," notes Jim Ebel, "we want them to be unique, unheard of beers. It's fun and it gives us some new things to do in the brewhouse. Basically we brew the same four beers over and over so it gets everyone really excited! The first brew will be out in late November for the holiday season."
Don't miss this one! It's from the brothers Ebel so it is going to be good (remember the Monarch Wit?!)
Emmett's Tavern & Brewing Company Is One Year Old - Somebody Check That I.D.
September 13th was the first anniversary of the grand opening of Emmett's Tavern & Brewing Company in West Dundee. To celebrate this event, Emmett's threw a big birthday party, complete with birthday cake, free appetizer buffet, prizes and $1.00 beers all day long. Guests flocked to the brewpub to sample the fine food and beer. Brewmaster Ryan Clooney was on hand to talk about his special brews, including a silky smooth cask conditioned stout and tasty Pre-Prohibition Lager. Other beers on tap for the party included a Pale Ale, a Belgian Wit, and Ryan's favorite Scottish Ale.
If you couldn't make the party, taste the beers again at the third annual Heritage Fest on the Fox in downtown Dundee on September 15-17th, or visit the brewpub at 128 West Main Street in West Dundee. Phone 847-428-4500 for more information or reservations.

What's Hoppening at O'Grady's?
O'Grady's Brewery & Pub of Arlington Heights has just put it's year 2000 release of Oktoberfest Beer on tap at the brewpub. It's big and bold - malty and expansive. Brewer Bob Ward put a little more, well, Oom-pah into the recipe this year and advanced tasting yielded a marvelously complex brew. Go there and taste this this one because it will sell out very fast. While you are there, check out the Bob's new Pilsener recipe as well. It is a little lighter but VERY drinkable. Don't forget the food either. Have some Irish Nachos while at the bar sampling some of Arlington Heights ' best beer. Tell 'em you read about it on Beer Notes On-line!
