Breaking News - MADD Mothers Lose Focus
May 26, 2000 -- Mothers Against Drunk Driving Have Become Mothers Against All Drinkers
The war against beer drinkers continues to escalate and the people at the Capital Research Center have presented an enlightening overview of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), showing how the organization has lost its way. The original goal of MADD, preventing traffic fatalities, has been replaced by a neo-Prohibitionist outlook that lumps legal beverage alcohol in with crack cocaine and heroin.
The February 2000 edition of the Capital Research Center newsletter “Alternatives in Philanthropy” features an article by Martin Morse Wooster entitled “Mothers Against Drunk Driving: Has Its Vision Become Blurred?”. Wooster chronicles the change from a grassroots, volunteer organization to a highly centralized bureaucracy that uses paid telemarketing services to raise funds. He also points out the millions of dollars in government funds that have been funneled into the MADD coffers.
More disturbing is MADD’s increasing neo-Prohibitionist leanings. A quote by outgoing MADD president Karolyn Nunnallee is typical of the new attitude. “After drugs and tobacco, I think the next frontier will be - it has to be - alcohol.”
