Breaking News - Real Ale Festival Primed to Pump In Chicago
January 9, 2001 -- Real Ale Festival 2001 to be held March 1-3 at Goose Island's Wrigleyville Brewpub
The fifth time is the charm as the Real Ale Festival (RAF) returns to Chicago to spread the gospel of Real Ale - living beer served with all the flavor the brewmaster intended. Goose Island Wrigleyville (3535 N. Clark Street, Chicago, Illinois) will again host the RAF.
The 2001 Real Ale Festival will feature:
* The largest collection of cask ales outside of Britain. (Over 150 this year)
* Award-winning Cask Ales from scores of American breweries
* Specially Imported British Casks: Selections to be announced.
* National Cask Ale Competition Awards (Saturday at Noon)
* Homebrewed Real Ale Brew-off (Thursday evening)
* Bottle-Conditioned Beer Awards (Thursday evening)
* Bottle-Conditioned Real Ale Tasting All Weekend
Real Ale is set apart from the "industrial" beers of the world by virtue of it being a living, changing product. Most modern beers leave the brewery in a finished condition, ready to be consumed immediately. Real Ales need some final attention from the "cellarman" before they're ready to drink. The yeast is brought back to activity and a wonderful variety of flavors are released. From the brewers' point of view, the downside is that Real Ale is a fragile product requiring greater attention throughout the process. Most breweries find it easier and more profitable to filter, keg and ship. More's the pity...
