Breaking News - Summer Brew From Widmer

May 19, 2000 -- Widmer Brothers' Sommerbrau Leads Way For Industry Increase In Seasonal Beer Sales

Widmer Brothers Brewing, the first craft brewery to introduce seasonal beers to America, saw seasonal sales jump an incredible 53% last year. One of their strongest performers, summer seasonal Sommerbrau, will return for a repeat performance beginning May I through August 13. Sommerbrau will be available in draught and in the new Widmer Brothers' customized long neck bottles.

"Summertime means greater thirst, and the need for a cool, lighter tasting beer," explained Kurt Widmer. "The light but flavorful profile of Sommerbrau makes it an ideal candidate for the summer season and our sales have just soared as a result."

Widmer Brothers Brewing is devoted to creating authentic seasonal beers and their pioneering effort has quickly caught on; national craft seasonal beer sales rose 12.3% last year. "Seasonal beers are brewed specifically to celebrate the uniqueness of each season," said Rob Widmer. "Beer lovers enjoy that every few months there is something new to taste."

Sommerbrau is an authentic German-style Kolsch beer, patterned after the original recipe developed in Cologne. Made with two-row barley malt, malted wheat and Spalter select hops, Sommerbrau is a top fermented, cold conditioned beer that has a light body, delicate flavor and a bright, golden color. It is crisp, refreshing and slightly dry with a hint of hop flavor and aroma. The character of Sommerbrau compliments many summer meals and is featured in several light and flavorful summer recipes found on the bottom of Sommerbrau 6-packs.

Sommerbrau will be available in draught and in 12-oz. bottle 6-packs and 12-packs through mid-August. Widmer Brothers will release Sommerbrau in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California, Montana, Alaska, Wyoming, Colorado, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Michigan, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C.
