Two New Bottle Shops Bring More Beer to Seattle
Both Bottleworks, Stumbling Monk offer wide selection
August, 1999Two new independent bottle shops have opened in Seattle in the last year. Both offer a great selection of brews you won't find at the nearest supermarket. Like Belmont Station in Portland, they are owned and managed by beer geeks who are happy to talk about beer and are highly recommended by Beer Notes.
Bottleworks, at 1710 - 45th Ave. in the Wallingford district, has over 300 beers in stock, about half of them Belgian. There are also exotic British ales and 3-liter bottles of Northwest cult favorites like Hair of the Dog. New Belgian brews like Scaldis and Rodenbach are now available also. There is a colorful mural behind the counter of a street in Belgium. The proprietors are Matt Bonney and Matt VandenBerghe , both former brewers at Maritime Pacific and Lost Coast. The Stumbling Monk is operated by Rob Linehan and Keith Johnson, both veterans of the wholesale beer trade in Seattle. They specialize in European imports and West coast bottled beers. With over 400 beers in stock, they also sell glassware, t-shirts, cigars, ciders, and meads. There are over 50 Belgian beers, including Fantome and Cantillon. They also stock some 10 barley wines, and sell 5 gallon kegs of some beers to go. The Stumbling Monk is located on Capitol Hill at 1635 1/2 Olive Way, telephone (206) 860-0916. Hours are Sunday-Thursday, 11 am-9 pm, Friday and Saturday 11 am - 10 pm.
