New Railyard Black And Tan Available From Broadway Brewing
August, 1999Broadway Brewing LLC of Denver is proud to announce their Railyard Black and Tan ale available in six packs now across the Rocky Mountain Region. Broadway Brewing, who has been contract brewing the Wynkoop Brewing Company and Aspen's Flying Dog litter of ales since 1994 recently purchased the rights to Wynkoop's popular Railyard brand name. The first thing they've done with it is to release their new Railyard Black and Tan ale.
Black and Tan, for most beer lovers, conjures up a vision of a pint glass filled on the bottom half of the glass with a dark beer, usually a stout, and a lighter beer usually a lager of some sort separated and sitting on the top half of the glass. These are usually skillfully dispensed from taps by a trained bartender and the results are usually as favorable to the eye as they are to the palate. Broadway's Black and Tan, which is a combination of Wynkoop's Railyard Ale, and Flying Dog's Road Dog Ale - a Scottish-style ale - is a unique combination that is more of a blend that does not sit separated in the bottle or in the glass. Its aestheticism lies mostly in the beer's flavor, not so much in its appearance. When poured from the bottle it does have a beautiful deep dark amber appearance but there is no separation of the two beers as you'll find with the aforementioned varieties of Black and Tan's. This is not the first Black and Tan to be bottled and sold without the separate layers distinguishing the two. Yuengling Brewery, America's oldest extant brewery from Pottsville, Pennsylvania has successfully sold a mixture of their Porter and Lager in both kegs and bottles for years. Saranac Brewery is another one that comes to mind who sells a mixture of a lighter and darker beer under the name Black and Tan as well. And with great success I might add. Broadway's new Railyard Black and Tan makes them Colorado's first brewery to package and sell a Black and Tan in this manner.
"The new six packs became available to consumers in Colorado in early June and so far sales have been great." Brewery representative Diane Armitage told me. The artwork on the new six packs really stands out on the liquor store shelf. Local Artist Malcolm Farley, "...after studying train car design from the Wild West days, created a series of scenes in the same rolling train. When the six packs are held next to each other, the scene becomes one uninterrupted piece." To see more of the artwork, check out www.malcolmfarley.com.
I'm sure that this fantastic blend of two of my favorites will be around for a long time to come. Broadway Brewing LLC, has recently purchased some new fermenting tanks and even began shipping some of Flying Dog's litter of ales to England, making them Colorado's first brewery to export overseas. It's a great beer from a great brewery that is doing great things for Colorado and the Micro-brew industry as a whole. Look for Railyard Black and Tan at your favorite liquor store. Just look for the package that looks like it should be on display at the Denver Art Museum.
